Family Literacy Day®

Family Literacy Day® is a national awareness initiative that is held every year on January 27th. It was created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999. Family Literacy Day raises awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

Register your Family Literacy Day event: Take a few minutes and register your family literacy event with ABC Life Literacy Canada by January 17th, 2018 to be entered into a draw for a chance to win a Family Literacy Day Prize Pack to arrive before Family Literacy Day!

Family Literacy Day in Saskatchewan

The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed January 27th to be Family Literacy Day in Saskatchewan. You can download the proclamation here to use and share at your own events.

Communities around Saskatchewan are celebrating this day, too. There is a list below, and let us know if you would like to add or update your event!

Saskatoon – January 20th, 2018
READ Saskatoon is co-hosting a Family Literacy Day event with the Saskatoon Public Library, on January 20th, 2018 from 10:00am to 1:00pm at the Rusty Macdonald Branch. Join in games, activities, and storytelling to celebrate Family Literacy Day – and you can win a prize, too!

Nipawin – January 24th, 2018
Nipawin Oasis Community Centre Co-Op Ltd is hosting a traditional family day on January 24th with Cree Language Storytelling by Cree Elders. This all-day event will also include teaching about beadwork and cooking traditional foods, and other literacy activities.

Lloydminster – January 25th, 2018
Jack Kemp Community School has invited the Lloydminster Learning Council Association to celebrate Family Literacy Day with their school on Thursday, January 25th, 2018, from 5:30 to 7:30pm. Mayor Gerald Aalbers will read the proclamation and then read a book to the audience. Each family in attendance will select a favorite book from “Raise-a-Reader” funding, which will be theirs to take home. There will be a picnic supper provided. After supper, each family will read their selected book together on their picnic blankets. Author Ann Campbell will read one of her books to the audience. Families can also win door prizes donated by Lloydminster Learning Council Association.

Swift Current, Maple Creek, Leader – January 26th, 2018
The Southwest Literacy Committee, together with the Swift Current Public Library, Maple Creek Public Library, and Leader Public Library will have local celebrities read Lunch Lady and the League of Librarians. Grade 3 children from the local school will participate, and the reading will be followed by hands-on activities, and nut-free snacks courtesy of Safeway. Each child will get a book to take home.

Rosetown – January 27th, 2018
The West Central Literacy Committee will be launching one of their new free mini libraries from 12:30 to 1:30pm at the Rosetown Civic Centre at the KidKare entrance. There will hot chocolate and goodies for everyone!

Prince Albert – January 27th, 2018
Prince Albert Literacy Network will be celebrating Family Literacy Day with a Read, Move, Share! event in the Gateway Mall. On January 27th, from 1:00 to 4:00pm families are invited to come and engage in family literacy activities.

Regina – January 27th, 2018
On January 27th from 1:30pm, visit your local Regina Public Library (RPL) branch and enjoy a magical afternoon of stories and fun activities, while learning new ways to make storytime part of your family time. Storytime is about sharing something you love with the people you love. Whether your passion is pirates and treasure or fairytales and princesses, every family is encouraged to explore together by making reading a tradition and cuddling up with a favourite book every day.

Swift Current, Maple Creek, Leader – January 30th, 2018
The Southwest Literacy Committee, together with the Swift Current Public Library, Maple Creek Public Library, and Leader Public Library will have a family reading session, followed by hands-on activities for adult ESL learners and their children.
