Kohkum's Royal Bannock

For Family Literacy Day 2026, ABC Life Literacy Canada set the national theme as “Make Mealtime Family Learning Time!” so we chose a Saskatchewan book about celebrating food and family, and the excitement of baking bannock for the Queen in “Kohkum’s Royal Bannock” by Wilfred Burton, illustrated by Hawlii Pichette, with Michif translation by Irma Klyne and Larry Fayant!

Join us on January 27 at 10:00am CST (GMT -06:00) as Saskatchewan author Wilfred Burton shares his story and the power of a meal to bring us together and share part of who we are. Wilfred Burton will also answer your questions! You can ask ahead of time, or ask live, after the story! Family Literacy Day is January 27, every year! For information about this year’s theme, visit our Family Literacy Day in Saskatchewan main page.

Wilfred Burton is a proud Michif, originally from the Midnight Lake area of Saskatchewan. He was a teacher for over thirty years. He is retired and does contract work for various organizations and publishers. The rest of his time is spent volunteering for groups like Gabriel Dumont Local 11, Li Toneur Niimiyitoohk Métis Dance group, Open Door Society and more.

Wilfred is a published author of several children’s picture books. His love of Métis storytelling, fiddle music, and dance was a gift from his mother, Georgina Nolin. This is a gift he loves to share with others through his presentations and writing.

This is a round version of the Saskatchewan Literacy Network logo, designed to connect with the visual style of the book "Fox and Bear" by Miriam Körner, featured in Family Literacy Day 2025. There is a cartoon bear in the lower left, sitting and looking at the viewer. The bear is sitting in front of the stylized book and globe of the Network logo, symbolizing the world of opportunities through literacy. The background looks like torn cardboard, to look like the repurposed materials used in the book art.Family Literacy Day 2025
